Dubai Salik toll rates in 2026: AED 6 peak, AED 4 off-peak, free overnight, plus 5% VAT from June. Learn how to avoid fines and cut your monthly toll bill.
If you drive in Dubai, Salik is part of your monthly budget whether you track it or not. In 2026 the system looks different from a few years ago: variable pricing now charges more at rush hour, there is a flat Sunday rate, and 5% VAT has applied to toll crossings since 1 June 2026. This guide explains how Salik tolls work, what you will pay, and how to cut the bill without changing your whole routine.
Salik is Dubai's electronic toll system. Each time your car passes under a toll gate, the RFID tag on your windscreen is read and the toll is deducted from your prepaid Salik account. There are no booths and no stopping. The gates sit on major routes including Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Garhoud Bridge, Al Maktoum Bridge and Al Mamzar, and Dubai added further gates in late 2024 to manage congestion.
Dubai moved from a flat AED 4 toll to variable pricing based on time of day. Based on figures reported by UAE media and car-service sites, the current structure for Monday to Saturday is:
Authorities adjusted the schedule temporarily during Ramadan 2026, so check the official Salik website or app for the current timetable before you plan a route. Rates and hours are set by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority and Salik and can change.
From 1 June 2026, 5% VAT applies to Salik usage fees and to tag activation fees. It looks small per gate, but commuters feel it. A driver who crosses two gates each way on a workday peak commute makes four crossings. At AED 6.30 each, that is AED 25.20 a day, or roughly AED 550 over 22 working days. The same trips at off-peak rates cost about AED 370. The difference is the reason timing matters more than it used to.
New cars sold through UAE dealers usually come with a tag already fitted. If yours does not, you can buy one at ENOC and EPPCO stations, Dubai Police and RTA service points, and through the Salik app and website. Your tag is linked to your licence plate and your account. Four steps keep you out of trouble:
If you pass a gate with no tag or an insufficient balance, you receive a fine, and it is charged per violation rather than per day. Fines are sent by SMS and can be paid through the Salik channels. Because fines can stack quickly on a route you drive daily, a few minutes setting up auto-recharge is the cheapest insurance you can buy. Confirm the current fine amount on the official Salik website.

Salik matters at the point of sale too. When you sell, clear any outstanding balance and unpaid fines, and move or cancel the tag. When you buy used, ask for proof that the tag is linked correctly. Our used car inspection checklist is a good place to start. Running costs, including tolls, fuel and parking, belong in the budget before you choose between a petrol SUV and a hybrid.
How much is Salik in Dubai now? Around AED 6 at peak and AED 4 off-peak before VAT on Monday to Saturday. Add 5% VAT.
Is Salik free at any time? Yes, between 1 AM and 6 AM, based on current reports.
Do I pay Salik on a rental car? Yes. Rental companies usually bill tolls to you later, sometimes with an admin fee, so ask about it at pickup.
Where do I check the official rates? The Salik website and app, and RTA announcements.
Salik is no longer a fixed AED 4 cost you can ignore. With variable pricing and VAT, small timing choices add up to real savings over a year. Keep your tag linked, keep your balance topped up, and use the off-peak and free windows when you can. Verify current rates with official sources, since they change.
